Crossing over the height of land from the Atlantic to the Arctic watershed, is really a straightforward series of portages. They flow in opposite directions, but they do come very close to each other. “The reason for that is that the two rivers – the Michipicoten and the Missinaibi – don’t join each other. It was one of the main, traditional travel routes from the Great Lakes to the Arctic Ocean,” Dave explains. They begin in early January and plan to reach Moosonee in early April. Dave and Kielyn Marrone will be travelling from the shores of Lake Superior to James Bay on a 90-day snowshoe expedition. Until recently, they operated an online shop that sold DIY kits for mitts, snowshoes, moccasins and other apparel. The couple has become known for their winter camping expeditions, workshops and handmade clothing, winter gear and snowshoes. Now in its 10th year, Lure of the North, headquartered in the bush outside Espanola, is a small company with a big mission – to encourage people to fall in love with winter. The Marrones are well equipped to take on this 900-km challenge. “It will take us about 90 days – the entire winter. “We’ll be crossing Ontario from Lake Superior, at the mouth of the Michipicoten River near Wawa, and then we’ll be heading north upstream on the Michipicoten River and downstream on the Missinaibi River, and that will take us to James Bay at Moosonee,” Dave says.
